Why I won't be watching the 2024 Olympics
Back when the 2021 Olympics was on in Tokyo I noticed that the event was a bit of a farce. This event featured things like empty stadiums with fake crowd noises artificially added into the broadcast. The farce even extended into forcing people to call it the 2020 Olympics even though it was postponed and run in 2021. This sort of thing showed to me that the event is about creating a spectacle, reality be damned. The bread and circuses show must go on.
Since then I've had the pleasure of meeting some of the Olympians that will be representing Australia. I know that the Olympics means a lot to them and on a personal level I hope that they perform well because that would mean a lot for them.
I however won't be watching any of this.
Firstly I'm sick of the bread and circuses situation with modern society. The olympics is perhaps the king of the bread and circuses events, an event where enormous amounts of taxpayer dollars are wasted to distract the populace from the realities of what is happening in the world. I don't want my perceptions of reality to be distorted by propaganda, so avoiding an event that's entirely designed to distort perceptions seems the only wise option.
Secondly the athletes that go to the olympics often spend years getting good at the sports that they are going to compete in. The rewards for these years of toil are for just about everyone else involved to make large amounts of money. But often not the athletes. This really shits me on a lot of levels.
I find this so disagreeable that I won't be watching, as watching the spectacle would be a part of endorsing it. Bread and circuses events will continue as long as people allow themselves to be consumed by them. I have better things to do with my time.
