Probability and stats recap

Lately I've been working on projects that require some higher level statistics, so I've had a need to recap on the topic.

When all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail

In much the same way when all you have is a blog everything looks like a blog post.

This post is not really a blog post in the traditional sense of the word, it's juts a document where I'm putting together a recap of probability and stats topics. By writing it up I'm hoping it helps me to remember things better.

Bayes' theorem

This is a mathematical rule for inverting conditional probabilities.

$P(A | B) = \frac{P(B | A )P(A)}{P(B)}$

Chain rule

How to calculate the probability of the intersection of events or the joint distribution of random variables. This rule is also sometimes called the general product rule.

$P(A \cap B) = P (B \mid A) P(A)$
